Gurkha Peace Foundation Hosts Welcome Ceremony for Mayor Harka Sampang Rai

A welcome program was organized by the Gurkha Peace Foundation (GPF) at the Bihibare Gatherings to honour Mayor Harka Sampang Rai of Dharan.

This event recognised Mayor Rai’s significant contributions to the Dharan community, particularly his efforts to tackle water scarcity in the region. Known for his activism and grassroots leadership, Mayor Rai has worked tirelessly to fulfill his campaign promise of improving water supply systems, supported by community involvement and international partnerships.

The Gurkha Peace Foundation, dedicated to supporting Gurkha veterans and community development, played a key role in celebrating the achievements of Mayor Rai. Attendees from both the local and wider communities, including GPF representatives, acknowledged his dedication to public service, which has earned him widespread support.

Mayor Rai, who gained prominence through his independent campaign for office in 2022, continues to inspire through his efforts in various social causes, including the ongoing work to provide sustainable water resources to the Dharan region.

During the event, Mayor Sampang acknowledged the contributions of various organisations, including the Gurkha Peace Foundation but emphasised that the real credit for Dharan’s development goes to the thousands of local volunteers who have selflessly provided their labour to uplift the city. He added;

“I do not feel like I am a leader, but a general person,” said Sampang, stressing his connection to the people. He highlighted the significance of the physical labor volunteers have contributed, stating, “You can sweat while pumping iron at the gym, but the sweat from carrying stones from the river is far more productive, as it benefits the greater good.”

Mayor Sampang also announced plans to build a statue of Sumnima Paruhang, aimed at preserving the local culture and heritage. He emphasised that while technology is important, it should be used as a tool to preserve nature, ensuring that cultural identity remains intact.

Under Sampang’s leadership, Dharan has been hailed as a unique city in Nepal, progressing through the collective efforts of its people, who are driven by a sense of community service and dedication.
