At the heart of hills is Ramthala Basic School, a small but vital institution serving the children of impoverished families.
For years, students in this remote region faced a significant barrier to global opportunity: a lack of quality English language instruction. Recognizing that English is the “bridge language” to higher education and stable careers, the Gurkha Peace Foundation (GPF) stepped in to bridge the gap.
Nepal has a deep historical connection with the British and Indian Armies. While the region is rich in heritage, it often struggles with economic isolation. Many parents at Ramthala Basic School are subsistence farmers or day laborers who dream of a better life for their children but lack the resources to provide private tutoring.
The Gurkha Peace Foundation, an organization rooted in the spirit of service and the unique bond between Gurkhas and local community, identified Ramthala as a priority. Their mission was clear: Education is the most sustainable form of support.
The GPF’s core intervention at Ramthala has been the funding and support of two dedicated English teachers, now students are moving beyond rote memorization to functional literacy.
For many students, speaking English was once a daunting task. Now, it is a classroom norm, empowering them to engage with modern technology and global information
School often suffer from lack of student turnover. The Foundation’s support provides these educators with stable fair wages to teachers ensuring the children have consistent mentors.
